It ’s been 6 great years , but our weeklyShooting Challengeis coming to an final stage . Here are the terminal submissions from all of you .
Winner: Better Late Than Never
I have thoroughly enjoyed viewing these competition , and am very distressing to see them ending . I ’ve always need to put in but have never been able-bodied to capture the right image .
I ve been a ‘ serious amateur ’ photographer since mediate school ( I ’m 30 now ) . I have alway been drawn toward double with a very clean or architectural aesthetical . I notice these two place construction locate at Wilshire Blvd and Normandie in Los Angeles , and their juxtaposed facades by accident as I was walking from a parking garage to this new lick chain i have been frequenting after work . It was shot with a nikon d600 with at 1/320 .

Winning Ugly
Thanks to Mark and the residual of the Gizmodo crew for all the work that travel into the hebdomadal shot challenge . I am really distressing it ’s over . I started participating a few old age ago after getting a novel and lustrous DSLR but having very little knowledge of photography and no money for class . The challenge gave me the stirring and tools I postulate to get a line more about photography every hebdomad . amazingly , it also became a social event : My unappeasable pursuit * of the pic challenge “ triple - crown ” ( i.e. , finalist , lead stab and winner ) became a topic of conversation in my office , and made everyone around me more concerned in photography and the work of other lensman who submitted entrance . My champion and I all became photographers , producers , curators , models , and even judges , and had a great clip in the mental process ! The challenge also allow me to connect with other photographers , build a portfolio of random stroke , and gain crucial acquisition that I now take with me wherever I shoot .
So in short … Thank you .
As far as the description for this last shot : From the minute I take the challenge , I know I ’d struggle with the endless possibilities ( I generally did well when the pic challenge squall for precise pedagogy or a specific proficiency or constraint ) , so after reading it I decide I wanted the shot to look like the end frame of a pic , in honour of the many eld of submissions and the long journeying to this last assignment . And I believe I reach that : I could see credit roll by this beach shot . It was shot in Half Moon Bay , CA . ISO 100 , 17 mm , f/11 , 1/320 sec .
- And in case you ’re wondering , yes , I did finally get the photo challenge “ three-fold - crest ” , although it was a chip of an ugly victory . My winner shooting fare from a “ tablet ” photography challenge , where my picture was think to exemplify how awful tablet tv camera were at the meter ( and there were only like , 8 meekness ) . But heck , after that * very long * of a wait , my friend and I still go to the corner saloon and toasted to triumph ! .. An ugly win is still a win .
[ Mark : In my defence , whenever you were up for a win , I was like , “ I have it off Diego will just accede something even better next calendar week , so he can await . ” ]

CVS
I was at a CVS to beak some thing up for a friend , and I saw a man thread in pour tic tacs down his pharynx , drink a one-half of a bottle of muscle Milk River before throwing it up onto a woman ( the charwoman in the foreground ) , and outcry at customers before getting tackle . I Mean, Guys, Nobody Actually Died
I , like most of you here , are distressing to see this series be retired . It has been fun , believe agitative , and educational to be a part of the submissions and to reckon at other people ’s study . Most of all it has give people who are not professional , but are armchair picture taking partisan such as myself , an outlet to submit our body of work for others to see in a ( mostly ) deterrence - free environment . Thank you Mark for host this challenge each week . I will neglect it .
I was guess about all this and could n’t think of a more meet setting than the local burying ground . It is not a place that you visit because you want to feel sad , it is a place you visit when you want to remember all the good time you have experience . The only gloominess I feel about the Shooting Challenge serial is the sadness in knowing there are not any more good memories to issue forth .
I first try a few wide slant shots and just was n’t well-chosen with the final result . It take me a while to realize that a bit higher zoom would shrink the astuteness of the image and give me the look I was blend for . The fall snow adds to the emotion , even though it was very grievous snow and got my camera a bit wetter than I would like . Afterwards I normalized the brightness to take the sharpness off the glare whites and brought the vividness down to mute the colors with Raw Therapee . Sony A77 , 40 mm , f/6.3 , 1/320 sec . , ISO 250

The River Of No Return
Since this is final Shooting Challenge , Thought it was only fitting to send exposure of My Home town River . The River of No Return Or AKA as The Salmon River . The river is bulge to frost up , in a month , ice jams and implosion therapy starting , during sub zero weather . So long Shooting Challenge ! Maybe they will revive you down the route !
HTC One mini 2/13mp / focal ratio 1600 and just when I figured out my camera ! Ha ! Ha !

Flow
Twin Falls in WA is my favourite place to take delineation . From the flow of the water rushing downstream , to the rock “ jumping ” out of the water , it is truly a peaceable home to take pictures . I love sit on the rocks , taking pictures and listen to the auditory sensation of the pee tremble down the falls ! It is also an amazing hike . This shot was lead using manual on a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with an EFS 18 - 55 millimeter lens . ( Shutter f number : 6 ” , Aperture : f10 , ISO : 200 , Focal Length : 35 mm )

Views From The 6ix
Being a real demesne lensman , the best part of my job is when I get to see amazing views like these from apartment balconies . There was a tidy sum of nothingness on the balcony at 36th storey of this building today . So , I put my heavy lens bag on the hook of my tripod to make it steady . I define the photographic camera on a 10 second timekeeper to minimize shake . Cannon 5D Mark 2 , 70 - 300 mm @ 120 mm , f5.6 , 5 sec , ISO 200 .

Abiqua Falls
Abiqua Falls is a beautiful , cloistered waterfall in Oregon . Getting there is a bit treacherous when it ’s wet outside as you ’ve get to repulse down a fairly steep hillside . We ’ve had a honest amount of pelting late and the water system was really moving . Setup was with a tripod . F/[email protect ] . Shot with a Nikon D750 and Nikkor 24 - 70 mm genus Lens .

One Last Walk
get one last walk in the commons before it get too inhuman . Taken as the sun was start out to fade .

Street Vendor
If you have been to South Korea before , then you acknowledge that street food vendors are very common here . I found this guy cable cooking and selling takoyaki ( pale yellow flour - based slugger fill up with diced devilfish , tempura scraps , pickle ginger , and immature Allium cepa ) from the back of his van . I took this candid dig with my Sony NEX-6 sequester with my 24 millimeter at 1/80 f1.8 .

Behind the Scenes
I was shooting Behind the Scenes in Chicago for a short film my booster was cinematographer on . Although shoot video , I consider a moment that was still - suitable , so I grabbed a DSLR off the table and lift up on these guys during a picture change . I loved their natural positioning - reminding me of your distinctive band cover art . The Panavision all rigged - up brought classical conjuring trick to the shooting , one I ’ll most likely never take again . Shot on Canon 5DIII 24 mm L 2.8 at 640 ISO .

Goodnight
As the sunshine sets on the Gizmodo photo challenge , I wanted to capture something that represented an ending . I bonk low - light picture taking and the possibility that the latest digital detector have enable . I set this up in the kitchen with my girl , and it took us a number of tries to get the candle in transition as it went out . We had fun doing it .
I have n’t been participate in the photo challenges very long , but I have enjoyed doing so . Even when I do n’t institutionalize in a picture , I make out seeing the wide-ranging submissions . I ’m sad to see them go .
canyon G7X , f/8 , 1 2d exposure .

Flatiron Building
I move to the Flatiron edifice originally to shoot the Nova art undertaking on the street , took a break to get aside from the crowds and point out the beautiful vividness in the sky from the sun setting . prepare my television camera for a long pic shot and was able to becharm some effective color in the sky and off the buildings , as well as some faint light trail from the cars going by on the street .
I used a Manfrotto tripod , Canon 5D Mark III camera body with an EF 24 - 105 mm f/4 L IS USM lens and a 10 halt impersonal compactness ( ND ) filter attached . I also used a remote switch by Vello to reduce camera shake . setting of f/4 , ISO 250 , long picture of about 5 and a half minute . Finally , mail service output done in Elements for more accurate white balance , shadowing and interference .
Side note : I ’m sad to see this photo submission serial come to an conclusion . When I start out to take photography in earnest , I would count forward to this weekly shot challenge if only to discover a new proficiency or stylus . It was n’t so much submit a photo in hopes of getting on the Gizmodo varlet but the joy of campaign yourself to try something new and take the tv camera off its “ automobile ” setting in the hopes of getting a great shot . Without these challenges , I would still be afraid of trying all the various options on my camera and would not have the noesis I now possess . So thank you for doing this challenge over the years . This series will be greatly missed .

Oahu Fog
Wow ! Really sad that this is the last “ Shooting Challenge ” like perpetually … I always enjoyed looking forward to all the submission from all over the world . Anyway , here ’s mine from Hawaii . take this on Sunday Nox in Mililani , Hawaii . It seldom if ever stimulate foggy here on Oahu where I last . Kinda like “ San Fran in Hawaii ” I infer . Very surreal like a “ Sin City ” feeling but not . Haha ! Could name it that . Used my Sony RX100 first gen . F1.8 ISO 3200 1/60sec . Aloha all and thanks for the great pyx chest throughout the year .

LA Sunset
Really sorry to see this contest end . I ’ve had the pleasance of participate this competition a few times , and in reality gain once ! I fancy that since the serial publication is calling it a sidereal day , I ’d submit a photo of the sundown from one of my favorite parks in LA . Thanks for all the amazing pic everyone ! Taken with a Sony NEX-6 .

Phetchaburimobile
Well definitely not my good , but all that I had to hand when I bring in that this was my last luck . I come across this rusted vehicle as I took an early sunrise take the air around the centre of Phetchaburi , Thailand . Not vacate , but no longer driveable , the possessor seems to be using it as a bit of storage space .
Not even a real television camera to apply in the last picture . direct on my Lava Star smartphone . So I decided to do a act of fine-tune and boosted the Saturation and the Red River to brighten up the picture .
Farewell Gizmodo Shooting Challenge .

Final Jet Ski
essentially , I did n’t get to hit the lake for as many weekend as I hoped this yr . Family activities , kids action , rainy weekend and more all conspired to keep me away . So this retiring Saturday after a morning jog and cutting the lawn one last time this year I told my wife I want to take my jet ski and run it around the lake one last time . listen you it ’s about 65F out around 3p and have a bun in the oven to get colder at night . She state “ go right ahead ” probably thinking I would n’t do it . I drag the preview out of my service department and hooked it up , and headed out to Lake Medina just outside San Antonio , Tx . There were n’t many people at the lake , and even less in the water . by from me there was only one sportfishing boat out . Go figure . One guy that saw me backing up to the piss aver I had “ gravid cajones ( balls ) “ than he did for convey in the water . I took 2 pics just to prove I made it out that day , and probably spend about 25 proceedings out on the lake .
Photo taken using an HTC One M8 , f2.0 , ISO 125 . ride to the lake by myself because I just had to take my jet ski out one last time before Winter fully set in , and lead for a abbreviated drive .

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge
I was n’t able to do the previous challenge , Night ; so for the final Shooting Challenge I pose out on a night military mission . With my girlfriend in towage ( she ’s the good ! many thanks to her for come along with me so many times ) , I guide this shot of The Sunshine Skyway Bridge at the mouth of Tampa Bay from a beach off the interstate highway leading up to the bridge from St. Petersburg . The wind was exceptionally strong coming off the bay . We had to position the car to protect the camera and tripod ; not just from shakiness ( which I got a little more of than I reckon ) , but from just getting blown over . The moon was also a flake brighter than I had hop . The internet state me the moon would be rising at three - something in the morning , but it was gamey in the sky behind me , washing out most of the star . But if you look close , I did capture a meteorite streaking by . Aside from the conditions not being as gestate , I am pretty happy with the issue . I just want to give in a skillful , wide-eyed picture for the final challenge . This was shot with our Nikon D3100 , ISO 800 , f/3.5 , 30 second photograph with the 18 to 55 mm lens at 18 mm .
Thanks so much for doing the Shooting Challenge for the last six years , I ’ve bask doing them and will miss it . But more so , I ’ll escape seeing the works of all the other folk who took the time to commit in their shot each week . It ’s been a blast . permit ’s do it again sometime .

Goodbye Gourd
Sad to see this segment go . I ’ve get into legion photos over the twelvemonth and have enjoyed see the upshot . In honor of this being the last , here ’s a photo of a carved gourd on it ’s last day before being drop off . accept as always , with my trusty Sony A65v and a 50 mm F1.4 crystalline lens .

Morton Arboretum
I decided to send this photo along at literally the last arcminute . I took this photo Friday Nox at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle , Illinois during our first snow of the time of year . I love how the reinvigorated blow outlines the contours of the bare branch . Taken with my iPhone six and give in as - shooter without any editing . Thanks for all the Shooting Challenges !

Duck Key Puddle
I was driving back to Fort Lauderdale from Key West to end the weekend . My wife and I stopped on Duck Key to take guardianship of the babe , and that ’s when I got out and turn around to see the sunlight set with some cloud setting in . This was my perfect shot to cease my misstep and the Giz challenge . Nikon D750 , 24 - 120 lens , 55 millimetre , f/ 5.6 , ISO 100 , 1/1000

Slide Rule
I charge this photo for a top to a PowerPoint presentation for my College Algebra class . The lecture was about figure out logarithmic and exponential equations . A chute rule uses logarithms to perform arithmetic , and I was going to show the students how that work after the lecture .
The photograph was bourgeon with my Canon G9 at 1/125th of a 2d and f/5.6 . A Yongnou speedlight with wireless gun trigger was used off tv camera as the light source . I chose the G9 because of its close-fitting focusing distance and the 4:3 aspect proportion matches a projector display . I did have to employ Lightroom for minor edits .

Upper East Side
I was spud final photos of a node ’s home that I was completing on the Upper East Side in Manhattan . Had come by and by in the good afternoon to get softer shadows as the southerly light tends to be really harsh through the windows . The window had just gotten clean and I did n’t even open them to shoot this quick one of 432 Park and the Empire State Building to the Dixie . The sheer height of the new super skinny tower is just huge when you see it against the skyline . The high base of the tower will be taller than the highest occupied floor of 1 World Trade . Sony A7ii , 1/60s @ f9.0 , 70 mm

Self-Portrait(s)
I wanted to create a personality portrait which show not just one side of me , but many , and I wanted to do it in a mode in which it seemed round-eyed . I create this self portrait by individually create 70 other individual ego portrait with as many different expressions as my nerve could come up . I then hang them up and placed myself in the midriff of my many selfs . I used a 28 mm at f2.8 , one ring flash , and two off flash bulb to fire up up and single out the background a second . To see the simulacrum at full resolution : . I have enjoyed participating on the shot challenge , I hate to see it go … .

Thank - you to all of you who enrol the Shooting Challenges over the years , sacrifice a spot of your weekend to do my artistic bidding and share your foxiness . While I ’d puzzle out at Gizmodo for several years before shoot Challenges ever begin , I founded the serial following my own experience in film schooltime , in which I ’d be furious at my professor with all of their artificially constrained assignments , like hit a shortstop with no speech sound , or film a story without ever cutting it . I was an auteur in the fashioning , after all !
In retrospect , those constraints were like running with weights on my leg , and made me a both a better lensman and film maker in the long run . Plus , they break my creativeness a start peak from which to pivot , so I always had a pile of ideas as to what to hit next . I figured the same would be truthful to a burgeon field of amateur photographers with dSLRs and increasingly terrific smartphones in their pockets . After six years and ? ? ? ? ? photos , I ’m more than a spot self - slaked to see my hunch was correct .
You shoot some really astonishing moments . So do n’t barricade now !
