I ’ll add up in good order out and say it : OS X El Capitan is n’t that exciting . However , Apple ’s newest operating system was n’t mean to be a revelation but rather an under - the - hood upgrade full of lilliputian advance . I will admit that a handful of the design tweak are downright delicious .
As the name implies , OS X El Capitan is a prissy modification of scenery rather than a whole raw realm . Yosemite was most definitely a dramatic improvement over Mavericks – which was markedly different than Mountain Lion . heavy changes can be jarring , and in that respect , El Capitan is refreshfully subtle . It ’s also full of dandy small surprises that are amazingly useful .
The Typeface
The most important but perhaps least obtrusive alteration is the typeface . Apple chase some brows last twelvemonth when it dump the old Lucida Grande fount for Helvetica Neue . Designersthought this was a strange choice , and wethought it was downright bad . patently , Apple took notice . In El Capitan , there ’s another new organisation - wide-cut typeface : San Francisco . It ’s nice !
For acknowledgment , here ’s what the same menu look like in Helvetica Neue :
The difference is very subtle , but that ’s kind of the point . San Francisco subtly adjust across gadget and screen , make it the perfect face for Apple ’s stable of devices .
The Cursor
Speaking of breaker point , allow ’s talk about cursors . Within my first hour of using El Capitan , I thought I spotted a bug . My cursor would suddenly become monolithic , I surmise , for no good reason .
Then I realized that this was a feature . You know how sometimes you ’ll fall back track of the pointer and shake the shiner to get it ? The new characteristic puddle the cursor about ten times its original size when you do that shake so you could see it more easily . It usually takes , like , three shakes – but once it ’s gigantic , you ca n’t miss it .
New Gestures
El Capitan is really full of gesture - based features , some of which have been borrowed from iOS . The one I wish the most deals with one of the native o X apps that I use the most : Mail . In my recent history as an iPhone user , I ’ve specially enjoy the ability to filch thing aside , namely unwanted emails . A hard swipe to the left field , and it ’s gone . El Capitan adds that functionality Mail . You just swipe left on the Magic Mouse or trackpad to delete , and you swipe right to cross out as read . It ’s fun !
The New Beach Ball of Death
I saved the unspoiled for last . You know the spinning pinwheel wind collector , a.k.a . the beach ball of death ? It ’s awed , because whenever you see it , you ’re being forced to look for your computer to catch up with your brain . The beach glob of dying was always an wretched hatful , too . wait at it :
Jony I ve does n’t like ugly UI , so the design squad made a new beach ball of decease . It ’s very pretty !
I hump it .
Now are these little design tweaks going to transform your life ? credibly not . However , they do make an otherwise boring climb feel like a lot of fun . And they decidedly make El Capitan worth downloading the upgrade . After all , it ’s barren .
