There have been rumors that Marvel Studios has been going to ferment Greg Pak ’s slay comic saga Planet Hulk into a movie for years . It ’s also been tied to Avengers : Age of Ultron , the Guardians of the Galaxy continuation , and now Thor : Ragnorak , too . But why are people obsessed with Planet Hulk getting a movie , when there are other , more appropriate Hulk stories available ?
It ’s not to say Planet Hulk is unfit . It ’s not ! At all ! But turning the Hulk into a space prizefighter who becomes king of a satellite is n’t really a Hulk story . It turn the Green Goliath into a hybridisation between John Carter and Conan the Barbarian ; it does n’t say anything or instruct us about the Hulk itself . He never even transforms into Banner during it ! Essentially , you could recite this exact same story with a unlike supporter and not call for to alter a affair .
Luckily , since The Incredible Hulk ’s debut in 1962 , there have been many tales that do a much good job at examining the Hulk as a curse , as a ogre , as a wedge , and as an intact component of Bruce Banner ’s human race , too . Here are six stories , classic and new , that would make more mother wit as Hulk ’s next solo cinematic outing than Planet Hulk .
This saga by Bruce Jones and John Romita , Jr. put the focusing on Bruce Banner , whose Hulk is his drear side . After the Hulk is blamed for the death of a immature child during one of his rampages , Bruce Banner move incognito and begins hitchhiking across the commonwealth , much like in The Incredible Hulk TV show . As he travels , he has to contend with a mysterious organization chasing him , assassin , a supernatural scourge and his own guilty conscience over what he might have done . Not only is it an excellent feeling into the character of the Hulk , but the supernatural aspect helps buoy up the Hulk ’s monstrousness — a newfangled area for the MCU to explore .
Peter David wrote the Hulk comedian for nearly a decade , and a circle of those comics are excellent . But perhaps the most easily - translated - to - film would be his first news report which scar the Hulk against one of his best foe , the Leader . When the Vasco da Gamma - irradiated evil genius steal a few gamma bomb for experiment , the Hulk and his few friends seek to arrest him while the military continues to hunt him down . The best part about this story is that David uses the story to coerce reader to inquire who is being most monstrous — the bad guy , the Hulk , or the soldier who are willing to give others to finally get the Hulk . Heck , even Bruce Banner has a few dark moments , as his cold reason pushes Betty Ross away . Also , there are sight of other demon to fight , include valet de chambre who become devil willingly just to kill the Hulk . Now that ’s some upright correspondence !
The popularity of Planet Hulk as a picture is especially baffling if you ’ve read its contiguous subsequence , also by Greg Pak . It ’s like the Hulk ’s version of Civil War , except on one side is the Hulk and on the other is every superhero who screwed him over ( by bourgeon him into distance , but also seemingly kill his space fagot wife — long story ) . The stop is this bright but still very raging Hulk returns to Earth with his space prizefighter booster and proceeds to perfectly annihilate Iron Man , Dr. Strange , Black Panther , Mr. Fantastic , and anyone who find in his way . Without Planet Hulk first , certain things would need to be changed , but it would still be narratively easy for the MCU ’s self-aggrandising shots to believe sending the Hulk somewhere safe , against his will , is a good plan . That ’s really all Hulk needs to be furious . Plus , who would n’t want to see Hulk calf love Dr. Strange ’s hands while he ’s in the astral plane , because the Hulk ’s anger is so devilishly huge it overstep dimensions ? No one , that ’s who .
Not everything in this storyline by Peter David would make for in an MCU Hulk movie . In fact , a plenty of the more obscure Marvel characters and need for the bad guys would need to be jettison . But its basic fib — Hulk land on Monster Island , where he has to battle friend , foe , and plenty of behemoth — would be a phenomenally entertaining plastic film by itself . All it needs is the same reveal at the end — that scientist are using the island to test a arm that turns vision into realness , a la Shakespeare ’s The Tempest and Forbidden Planet — and you have a film about Hulk essentially fight his own internal demon … who happen to be a merriment variety of superheroes , supervillains , and Brobdingnagian , amazing monsters . It ’s a can’t - miss .
The legendary John Byrne only wrote eight return of the Hulk before an argument with Marvel brass cease his tenure , but those eight way out are still some of the best , and they have a mythologic assumption : What if someone managed to separate Bruce Banner and Hulk ? As it turns out , Bruce is thrilled — he even finally feels good enough to wed Betty Ross — but the Hulk loses his human beings , and becomes the teras he ’s always been feared as . Byrne was n’t able-bodied to fetch up his story , and his ideas for the comic were apparently pretty crazy , and by all odds too bonkers for the MCU . However , the basic crux of the matter is that the only agency to block the Hulk was for Banner to blend with the Hulk again . A movie where Banner actually fights the Hulk is gold by itself , but one where Banner must also willingly give up his exemption and happiness to save the existence from the Hulk ? That ’s , well , two-fold atomic number 79 .
When Marvel NOW gave its bomber a soft reboot , Bruce Banner was suddenly working for SHIELD , much like he ’s been doing in the MCU . The master dispute is that Banner had made a variety of peace with the Hulk , and the fact that he was just die to Hulk out sometimes . But SHIELD could check that that when that happened , the Hulk would take out his passion on a worthy target ( i.e. , supervillains ) . finally , thanks to some of the chrono - devilry that Marvel is so often beset with , the Hulk found himself get together SHIELD ’s T.I.M.E. division ( Temporal Irregularity Management and Eradication ) , which entail he also started fighting spoilt guy cable throughout the account of the Marvel universe . To be absolutely good , I have no theme what the overarching plot of a Hulk : Agent of SHIELD motion-picture show would be , but I do n’t even demand one . I just need to see the Incredible Hulk punching a dinosaur on a moving-picture show screen , please .
