There ’s a frightened youngster inside all of us . That ’s the first thought I have as I watch Dulce , a documentary film short about climate change , and the ways it ’s forcing Afro - Colombian charwoman along the Pacific Coast to accommodate to rising ocean degree .
The opening scene features untested Dulce , a lady friend who appears no older than seven , crying as she learns to swim . Now , I am by all odds not the best swimmer , but swim is more than a recreational activity for Dulce and the other Kid in her village of La Ensenada , Colombia . For them , it ’s a matter of life or decease .
As a fishing hamlet , much of their time is spend on boat . The villagers use them to glean the piangua , a cockle that hides in the muds of the mangroves , which the women both eat and deal . It ’s been their way of life-time for generations , but today , the world ofrising sea level and higher tidesthreatens the very existence of hamlet like this .
Today , the water can sweep their villages away at instant . Other Colombian communities have seen theirhomes destroyeddue to floods .
“ Can you opine if one of these day the water rises so high-pitched that the house fall while we ’re inside the house , ” Dulce ’s mom , Betty , asks her while doing her hair in the film . “ Those who can swim do it what to do . And those who do n’t ? ”
“ They drown , ” Dulce say , acknowledging that individual would be her in this frightening hypothetical scenario .
The 10 - second documentary give viewers just a gustatory sensation of Dulce ’s domain . It ’s attractively shoot and offers moments of silence — to reflect perhaps , or to imagine being in their shoes . Produced by Conservation International and filmmakers Jungles in Paris , the short has already won Best Documentary Short at the 2018 Palm Springs International Shortfest . Its subject matter around clime variety — and who it ’ll hit hard — resonates with people .
“ Whether you ’re talk about clime alteration or water issues , vulnerable community are at the cutting edge , ” state Anastasia Khoo , an executive producer on the short circuit with Conservation International , to Earther . “ And women are no exception to that . ”
Around the Earth , women take up difficult tasks ( like collecting these shells ) to provide for their families . As the primary caretaker for their families , they ’ll be the one most impacted by climate modification . Dulce reminds us of this true statement .
The film is still going through the fete circuit , so you ’re gon na ’ have to catch itwherever it heads nextto watch it yourself . In the meantime , relish this house trailer .
