Catherine Scottis a graduate student working toward her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto . She ’s studying the courtship behaviour of black widow woman spiders . That mean that her experiments often involve waiting for spiders to have sex .
And because her lab keeps a breeding settlement of spiders ( so they do n’t have to go out into the orbit and entrance novel adult for every experiment ) , even when she ’s not doing experiment she can be hold off for spiders to have sex . That was the event last Friday , when she set up four union bowl to seek to bulge up the numbers of one dim widow woman species in the research lab .
Once she ’d put a male and a female person in each case , she settled in to watch . When we ask why , she explained , “ I was sit in the room trust to trip up them in the act because it ’s easier to evidence for sure that they are copulate in real life than by reviewing the video footage . ”

By 2:00 atomic number 61 on Friday afternoon , she ’s already spent two hours see male and distaff spiders act like midway schoolers at an 8th score dance .
oh wait no , the first male to make contact has convey a stair back , and is now engage in some serious self - training .
thing start looking up when one male switching into courtship behavior .
MALE # 1 IS THROWING SILK ON THE FEMALE ! this is where it start out to get exciting , family . The ' nuptial veil ' is happening ! ! ! !
But he back off .
Nevermind , I speak too soon . He ’s get back to destroy the female ’s web .
Hopes are raise , and smash again moments later .
oh hold off he ’s back ! more sexy silk wrapping is happening … . but the female start moving and he beat a hasty retreat
And over in the other sports stadium , there ’s not a plenty of suit croak on .
Female 3 has break moving finally . Come on male person 3 ! Now is your time to shine !
… .. male 3 remains motionless … .
now female 2 is on the move , & male 2 has retreated to the far edge of the web . This is going to be a tenacious day .
Leaving Scott to put her hopes on the pair in arena # 1 .
I have high hope for virile # 1 . He ’s going to mount the female any time now , I can feel it .

This is the point when we discover out she ’s not just waiting for the spider to have sex , she ’s sitting in the dark expect for the spider to have sex . Ah , science .
calamitous widows are nocturnal , so we do experiment during the night , under cherry light , which they ca n’t see .
Back in arena 1 , there ’s some potential action .
… and the female casually brush him away with a hind peg . He overlook on a dragline , and regroups .
Apparently , males can do this for hours .
Male # 1 is boldly approaching the female person for a second try . He is thrill his tiny little stomach like a wiz .
male person 1 is carefully laying down a light silk swathe on the female ’s front legs
Now he ’s right on top of her , but a level of webbing lie between him and the female person . That ’s not gon na figure out , manful # 1 .
MALE # 1 HAS DONE IT . HE HAS jump on THE FEMALE !
Huzzah ! But after a couple of minutes …
male person # 1 has evidently decide that the timing was n’t quite correct . He has get off , and moved to the polar final stage of the web . : : : :(
Female 1 is presumably timeworn of all these trickery . She ’s brush off the silk the male lovingly wrapped around her .
Male # 1 endeavor to come on the distaff two more time , but she does n’t seem that interested .
She ( very slowly ) chases male person # 1 to the opposite end of the web
She is likely starting in on repairs , oblivious to the fact the male # 1 is still courting below
What about the other arenas ? Nope , no spider sex there , either .
For those just tuning in , we ’re follow the behavior of 3 pairs of black widow that are * supposed * to be mating
In arena 1 , we have male # 1 , fit out with only one palp , but of the 3 male , the only one that has manage to mount the female
In sphere 2 , we have male person 2 and distaff 2 . Female 2 has been motionless for some meter . male person 2 has been grooming for a good 15 minutes .
And in arena 3 , male and distaff 3 have done nothing at all for , oh , I ’m guess about an hour ?
Now that distaff # 1 has made some hangout , male 1 has to go back and do more vane reduction
Before virile black widows commence solicit , they put down part of the female person ’s web . Scott has found that the behavior prevent other males from finding the female and edge the first male person out . If she fixes her web , the male person needs to back up and re - destroy part of it . Scott also explicate why it weigh that male person # 1 only has one pedipalp .

The cool affair about spiders is that their spermatozoon transfer organs ( pedipalps ) are totally separate from their gonads , where sperm is produced
When the male matures , he spins a special entanglement and blurt sperm onto it .
Then he sop up the sperm up into his pedipalps ( the fifth dyad of extremity at the front of his body , which are kind of like hands )
With his pedipalps thus " level " with sperm , he ’s ready to go find a female and stuff the sperm inside her pair spermatozoan storage organs
Meanwhile , back in arena 1 , male 1 is woo nearer and nigher to the female .
This is , for those of you counting , male # 1 ’s 6th move toward the female person .
Everything is happen all at once ! 1 is reach contact with the female . The lead of one tarsus is on her venter !
Male 1 edges ever closer to the female , but no , not yet . Have patience.@RRoyaute
And he ’s sure taking his prison term about it .
Male # 1 is taking a break . He ’s hang aright next to the female .
After another 30 minutes , he ’s still hanging right next to the female .
We ’re back , and as predicted , not much has change . manlike # 1 rest motionless . Male # 2 is still . Male # 3 is – you guessed it – not moving
Scott ’s been incredibly patient , but she ’s athirst . Fortunately , she has a technological fix for the wait and watching problem .
Unfortunately , as absorbing as these last 5.5 hours have been , I have to go home and eat dinner .
I ’ve arrange the photographic camera to retain record in my absence . I ’ll watch back tomorrow morning and look at the video .
As of Sunday , she still does n’t know whether her spider mated .
