Here ’s your weekend read designation : a few days ago , Vulturepublished a wide - ranging , thoroughgoing oral history of the excellentBlack Mirror episode “ San Junipero,”a sensational fable about queerness , love , and second prospect .
It ’s a great piece , and Brooker says some interesting thing in particular about the tortuous nature of the sequence , which I , for one , utterly did not image out ahead of metre .

There ’s a moment in Tucker ’s when the guy prove Yorkie this colonnade driving game , and a motorcar crashes on the screen . She has this horrifying intuitive reaction because it reminds her of the car crash that paralyzed her . Once you know what ’s going on , it makes perfect sense . We even put the haphazardness of a cable car crash on the soundtrack , so I thought people would instantly go , “ Oh , she ’s been in a automobile crash in existent life . ” But no one ever picks up on it , until maybe a third view .
The other big clue was represent the Smiths ’ “ Girlfriend in a Coma ” over a shot of Yorkie . You see , I seem to mean that viewers are writing all these small details down ! But they ’re not . People only discover when a plot does n’t make sentiency . It ’s good to give the audience a prospect to get it , though , because otherwise it might feel like a concluded bearded darnel .
write surprising plots like in Black Mirror has to be a never-ending challenge , and Brooker apparently did n’t cogitate he was pull it off . The whole story is full of fun tidbits like that — or like the fact that , to get a feel for each other , Gugu Mbatha - Raw , who take on new Kelly , traded lines with Denise Burse , who play older Kelly , and read each others ’ parts together .
“ San Junipero ” was a stunning while of TV — translate about it still makes me a li’l weepy — and I extremely recommend checkingthis thingout .
