On the cusp between Millennial and Gen Z , I ’m a mood diary keeper who is sometimes mistaken for a young protestor at events — despite clear tire a press badge .
The true statement is , I am a young mortal passionate about the surroundings , but it ’s been a while since I was a teenager , and even I when I was , I was n’t out on the streets like today ’s climate stripling . I spoke with @climemechange , who asked to remain anonymous for professional reasonableness , both before and after last Friday ’s clime strike . Our conversation about clime apathy , how stripling are cleverer than all of us , and using memes as a tool for protagonism is below , lightly edit for lucidity and briefness .
Emily Lipstein , Earther : So how did you number up with the idea to take up the account ?
@climemechange : I kept landing on this subject that nobody could make the topic of mood change engaging or appealing to a wide-eyed audience . citizenry had tried mood modification related comedy and it always come off as either Byzantine or condescending . Earther : You carry the hopelessness around some view of climate change , and how screwed we are in a lot of way . But at the same time , you use that to educate multitude .
@climemechange : I definitely have done more serious material in Instagram Stories where I ’ll say , “ Does anybody have any interrogative sentence about clime change ? ” or I ’ll do an explainer on a sealed theme . I think way back , I did one on the duck curve , which is an important matter to read about solar energy .
EARTHER : Who do you see as your hearing ? It does n’t seem like you ’re trying to change the spirit and minds of climate deniers .
@climemechange : I ’m not out there stress to do that , even though I know I have a couple of times . But I actually do n’t pay much attention to people who are stomp their feet and not pay attention to the science . I think a much bigger problem than climate change denial is apathy or ignorance . [ My account is ] for getting the people that can say a million more things about the Avengers world than our own universe , citizenry who just simply do n’t know about what ’s going on and are n’t think about it and make them a fiddling morsel more conscious of it .

I feel like we ’re living in this silly sentence in which a major part of the narrative is like , yeah your charge card drinking straw are going to stamp out everything versus , you get it on , focalize on all of the bad things pot do .
Earther : There are other mood - touch on memers I follow on Instagram that make really great , funny posts . It ’s this mix between them being like “ save the turtles ! charge plate stubble are bad ! ” and then realizing climate action go far beyond just that . I sense like I ’ve never see teen do this sort of high - level thinking about clime change nut - masse shot until now .
@climemechange : But individual choice does matter . We all have the individual pick to prepare and vote and raise our voice in a way that might move the acerate leaf in the proper direction . They ’re all so quick and witty , but at the same time again what they ’re doing is on a whole other spirit level of really getting people to be serious about this too .
Earther : Were there any signs or meme that you wish you had made that you saw at the climate strike ?
@climemechange : There was one that I was like , this joke is good than any joke I ’ve ever made . And it was somebody with a sign that enounce something along the line of “ Save the Planet Leonardo DiCaprio ’s girl need a future too . ”
Earther : It ’s suspect that you bring up that mansion — I go steady a intermixture of people loving it and hating it , being like , I ca n’t trust people are trivializing clime modification in this preposterous path . But Leonardo DiCaprio ’s bass involvement in environmental campaign is why it ’s such a advanced and effective joke .

Earther : You ’re not a teen , but you ’re doing the internet stuff that teenagers do .
@climemechange : Yeah , I ’m in an interesting position . I ’m an adult , but I ’m not that old . I ’m a young soul , but I have real practical industry experience that makes me able to pertain to both younger and sure-enough people . There was one female parent who reached out to me say that she was interested in have her son to learn about climate change , and that my posts got his invertebrate foot in the threshold to learn about it . @climemechange : Honestly I believe the more important matter is to follow the activists , likeGreta Thunberg , theZero Hourpeople , andAlexandria Villaseñor . There are some young person activists that have been raising their voices and give some amazing changes .
And I think that , as grownup , we require to be support these youth activists as much as possible . I ca n’t think back a single person I ever encountered as a teenager who got as well - understand and as well-read and as bluff as they have . And now these people are like , in the UN and talking to government officials and help oneself to make change . Whether you ’re a new grownup like us or an older one , you need to be support these mass like crazy because they deserve it for having made the sacrifice they ’re making , and for hold the foresight of what their future could look like [ if serious action is n’t assume ] .
