Why send one robot to search a world when you may send a whole bunch all at once ? Such is the cerebration behind NASA ’s highly conceptual Shapeshifter — a modular , morphing , ego - assembling automaton up to of deploying several smaller machines .
The Shapeshifter construct is currently being develop as part of NASA’sInnovative Advanced Concepts(NIAC ) programme , which encourages investigator to machinate creative new ways of search distant actor’s line . In its idealized net form , Shapeshifter would be a morphing , modular , self - assembling golem comprised of smaller robot dub “ cobots . ” Every cobot would be fit out with a small propellor , let them to move independently of one another . The cobots “ could also go spelunking , forming a daisy chain to observe contact with the open , ” according to NASA . “ Or they could transform into a celestial sphere to roll on matted surface and maintain energy . ”
Once on Titan ’s surface , the landing portion of the arrangement , or “ mothercraft , ” in the words of Agha , would provide an energy source for its cobot USA . The lander would also be equipped with various scientific instruments and tools . The squad estimates that 10 cobots would fit within a lander measuring about 3 meters ( 9 feet ) wide — around the size of the Huygens lander , which visited Titan back in 2005 . But unlike other Lander , this one would be able to fly through the moon ’s dense atmospheric state .
In its current form , Shapeshifter is semi - autonomous , requiring some human direction . finally the bot will be fully self - reliant , which it ’s going to have to be given the complexness of exploring Titan , not to mention all its moving parts .
