When the crew takes a brief reprieve , they come across an remaining priest with something to enshroud . fortuitously , Carl is on the pillow slip ! Unfortunately , he does n’t merchandise his sheriff ’s hat for Sherlock Holmes ’ deerstalker , but everyone gets a chance to fascinate up before the asshole hits the fan again in true Waking Dead style .
After the explosive season premiere — figuratively and literally — it makes sense that the show would want to give Rick and the others some clock time to breathe . Most of these eccentric have barely figure each other since the Governor destroy the prison and scattered them in the time of year 4 mid - time of year finale , and both they and witness want a space to come together and see where everybody stands with each other .
I ’m not sure that I would have given this instalment to creator Robert Kirkman , however . As his other TWD television playscript have shown , he ’s better at driving plot forth and shocking moments than he is at getting at what characters are feeling and think without feature them say in a flash “ I AM cogitate AND FEELING THIS . ” On the plus side , “ Strangers ” is probably his undecomposed script episode so far , but it still feel clumsy equate to last hebdomad ’s fantastic premiere .
Part of the trouble is that Gabriel , the non-Christian priest who Rick and the others meet shrieking on top of a rock in the forest and surrounded by Walker , is creepy-crawly , but not necessarily in an intriguing way . I ’ll excuse : Gabriel ( played by Seth Gilliam , yet another alum from The Wire ) is ludicrously funny . He completely falls to pieces when zombies are around , which make the fact he ’s survived this long very strange . He has a church that he says he ’s barely allow , but it ’s full of canned food ; he claims he held a canned food campaign right before the apocalypse hit . He makes super - unearthly jokes about leading everyone into a deadly trap and then seek to explain he just has an inappropriate sense of humor .
When Gabriel tells the chemical group that there ’s one billet nearby he had n’t raided for supply because it contained a XII zombies , Rick , Michonne , Bob and Sasha settle to make a raid , force the very dysphoric Gabriel to come along . Before he leave , Rick tells Carl he can never , ever countenance his guard down and that he ’ll never be dependable — a drear monitor of the ceaseless danger of this young boy has grown up in , which would be more effective if it had n’t been a public lecture Rick probably should have gift him back in season two .
At this point Inspector Carl enters the scene . I really wish we could have seen Carl wander around the church service , looking for mansion of some kind of sinister behavior ( okay , I actually do n’t , but it ’s really funny in my head ) . When Rick return , Inspector Carl has found two clues : 1 ) tongue marks near one of the doors , as if someone had been trying to go in ; 2 ) “ YOU WILL BURN IN HELL FOR THIS ” rub in one of the kayoed walls , likely by one of the same multitude .
Now this is pretty interesting , but at this point Gabriel ’s Dark Secret has been telegraphed so hard it ’s going to have to be all fucking harebrained to pay off . manifestly , the quality is hiding something – helpfully repoint out when Rick narrate him “ YOU’RE HIDING SOMETHING ” — but a late reveal designate it may be that he just has n’t gotten over his married woman turning into a zombie , in which case who cares ? Everybody ’s misplace somebody , dude .
anyway , while Carl is detecting , Rick and the other hit the food bank Gabriel told them about . A leaky roof has led to a talebearing story which has led to a repellent pit of murky liquid and the most disgusting , water - logged zombies of the show so far ( seriously , they ’re directly out of Return of the Living Dead ) . As Bob so aptly position it , “ If a sewer could puke , this is what it would smell out like . ” But the cellar is also flooded with canned goods , and despite the hazard , the group needs supplies . So Rick and the others crawl down and use the massive shelves in the basement to form a barrier behind which they can stab the zombies in the read/write head . Rick drive the increasingly sketchy Gabriel to infix the pit with them , but a zombie in methamphetamine hydrochloride ( that aforementioned late reveal indicates she was Gabriel ’s married woman ) causes him to completely lose his shit , and Rick ends up have the break the barrier to rescue him . This round leads to a zombi grabbing Bob and pull him under , but Sasha helps deliver him before anything inauspicious bechance . No , really . For certain . He ’s altogether fine . Do n’t even call back about it .
At any charge per unit , the group gets a ton of supply and throws a minute of a company at the Christian church . They eat , booze and are alert — Gabriel even break out the communion vino for everyone to drink . At this full point Abraham takes the moment of tranquility and felicity to make a pledge — a toast that is really a supplication for Rick and the radical to accompany Abraham , Eugene and Rosita to DC . Abraham gives it the toilsome sell — even beyond promising a land of safety where the government has prepared for a situation even this messed up , he pulls out the “ Save the man for that babe young lady ! ” — and of class Rick is confident . With everyone finally reunify and the prospect of literal hope , it ’s hard for everybody not to feel excited and well-chosen for the first time in who knows how long — although Gabriel ’s communion wine probably is n’t hurting either .
But this newfangled journeying has n’t begun , because the night is not yet over . Unseen by almost everybody , Carol sneaks off to a car she and Daryl found earlier . While Rick has forgiven her for wipe out and burning the two taint multitude at the prison , his banishment is still librate on her mind , and she seemed to be think over leaving again … but Daryl finds her before she can take off . But before they can even have a conversation about it , a machine zooms past them on the road , a car with a white hybridization on the back windowpane — the car that take Beth ! Daryl and Carol wing into their car and shoot off after the vehicle .
Now that would be a passably exciting termination , but that ’s not how Robert Kirkman rolls . After an emotional kiss with Sasha , Bob also wanders off from the church service , and begins sobbing . It seems jolly clear that he was in reality call off or something back at the food bank , and is cry because he have a go at it he ’s exit to die and turn into a zombie — but we do n’t sleep together for certain because that ’s when someone come up behind him and knocks him out . When he waken up , he ’s tie up and Gareth , the main whoreson from Terminus , is looming in front of him . He ’s in a summer camp full of termite , which is bad news program too , but the unsound news is that Gareth is eating his leg . And it ’s not attach . And it ’s been cooked . And , apparently , Bob is pretty tasty .
And that ’s how Robert Kirkman does an conclusion . I ’m not a huge fan of bringing the Terminus the great unwashed back for rung 2 — I call back ferment them into petty assholes crumpled on revenge makes them more like the Governor and less like the more interesting , humanity - less monsters of the premiere — and I ’m also not a vainglorious lover of it seemingly rationalize Rick ’s initial conclusion to go back and vote out all the Termites last installment , which I think is antagonistic to the mankind Rick recovered over seasons 3 and 4 . But you ca n’t deny that a dude eating another clotheshorse ’s leg is n’t a hell of an interesting way to end an episode .
Assorted contemplation :
• I do n’t mean to gloss over all the character moment in the show , but they do n’t fit very easily in a recap . They range from the good ( Tyreese and Carol consort not to say anything about the girls , mostly because Tyreese needs to completely occlude it from his mind ) to the ludicrous but still moving ( Rick thanking Carol and ask if he and the group can join her ) to the crappy and on - the - nozzle ( Carl : “ Gee whillikers , dad , I cerebrate we should aid people . You know , as a general insurance policy . ” ) .
• I did n’t agnise Michonne had left her steel back in Terminus , but I really care her speech communication about her not escape it , as it symbolized her joyless life of nothing but survival prior to meeting Andrea and the group . It ’s still unearthly seeing her without it , though . I wonder if one of the Termites will have it ? Still , her desert the brand is vast , and I think it would be a ignominy for the show to go back on this particular prospect .
• Looks like Gabriel was spend his time handwriting copy of the Bible . billet : The old , pre - Scott Gimple Walking Dead would have express us the Scripture and then Carl would have say , “ He write down the Bible ! ” in case we were too dim to empathise what we were seeing . Gimple just indicate the Bibles and lets viewers make the connection , which is one of the chief reason TWD is a much good show now .
• Speaking of : In the beginning of the episode , Daryl senses someone watching them , and off - screenland , he tells Rick about it , Rick trust him and has Daryl check for racetrack . Back on - screen , Daryl merely says he did n’t find any running , but Rick intrust Daryl ’s gut and tells him to be careful . Again , most of that exchange is off - filmdom , but it still explain everything that happen without telling us , by showing us all the entropy we demand in as concise a manner as possible . In the sometime TWD , Daryl would have sensed somebody . He would told Rick , Rick would n’t have trust him . Then Daryl would have sensed the guy wire again later , told Rick again , Rick would have told him to look for tracks , and then we would have learn Daryl look for tracks and not discover anything , and then he would have told Rick that he did n’t find any tracks . It would have taken up an entire sequence . Maybe two .
• I witness Tyreese ’s dear of Wee Baby Judith as adorable as everyone on the show seems to find it . It also take care like the Rick and Tyreese partnership , a main family relationship from the strip , will be starting in heartfelt this season .
• AMC ran a TWD flashback of Daryl yelling at Rick in season one , when he first learned Rick handcuff Merle to a roof somewhere . Both Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus calculate 15 years young . It was uncanny .
• Glenn and Maggie foray a shooter store and regain a few silencers , which may be something that end up important later . Two things to note , though : 1 ) Glenn trip and circumstantially fires his gun , and test to go past it off as he was being attacked by a zombie , which is kind of curious , and 2 ) they find the gun store by looking it up in a telephone book . I always like it when they show how the theatrical role in reality accomplish little things like this in the zombi apocalypse .
• Carl , upon showing Rick the “ YOU WILL cut IN HELL FOR THIS ” on the church . “ It intend something . ” THANK YOU WORLD ’S GREATEST DETECTIVE .
• So if Bob has been infected — taint in the sensation that he ’s dying very very rapidly now — does that mean Gareth and the termite are also infected from eating him ? I sham not , since narratively that ’s a atrocious payoff , to have these antagonist get make out so anti - climatically , but holy shit that would be the capital thing ever . I was literally trust Bob would look down at his missing leg and just pop out cackle evilly , but no dice . So does this mean Bob was n’t infected ? Or did cooking Bob ’s branch ruin the zombi bacteria ? Crap , that ’s probably it .
