This week we’veheardthat Disney will be looking at “ spinoff and prequel ” thought for the resilient - action Beauty and the Beast movie that has just come up out . But they do n’t take to look at other option , because there is one obvious and perfect selection : A movie about Gaston .
Ever since I saw the live - action Beauty and the Beast I have think about Luke Evans ’ Gaston close to … oh , every five minutes . As I said in myreview , Evans is far and away the proficient part of the remake . While everything else add to the film feel like a stumbling block , Gaston ’s scenes were a delight to behold . It was n’t incisively that Gaston had depth so much as he walk a line of menacing and uproarious that just work .
Yes , the movie trip a little bit with the add up backstory its given the character — but the unmixed magnetics of Evans ( and Josh Gad as LeFou ) finagle to pull it off . We know from interviews with Evans that Gaston ’s a local paladin because he saved Villeneuve from pillager . And the pic call in him captain and talk about the “ war , ” which is where LeFou decided to follow him .
And I want that movie . I want a “ Gaston at warfare ” movie a sight .
Here ’s the thing : I do n’t want to make Gaston sympathetic . Gaston ’s scary because he ’s not in willpower of magical office or a family member or royalty . He ’s basically a guy who , by virtue of being handsome and physically inviolable , has never been denied anything , ever . His evil is a sort of casual sort of threat . And charting that path would be fascinating .
A movie that shows how Gaston saved the town and win the adulation of its dweller would be entertaining , but a motion picture that also showed how his actions and approval do n’t make him a expert mortal would be so , so interesting . It would soak up a larger crinkle under the idea that the whole townsfolk is complicit in raising monsters and excluding Belle , in produce a mind-set that lets Gaston think he can peril Belle and off people to get what he wants .
The moving picture has a bit where Gaston start to fall back his temper and LeFou speak him down by talking him back to his felicitous billet : the war . He remark the blood , and the furiousness , and “ the widows . ” Everything he learn in Villeneuve was reinforced in the United States Army , that force was right and that fair sex would bewilder themselves at him . Belle really want to go out the village , but Gaston shows that the world outside Villeneuve is n’t necessarily better .
Gaston comes back from the war even more full of himself and even more prone to cult and violence . Again , it makes Gaston more three - dimensional but it ’s important that Gaston is n’t “ offend . ” He ’s a guy cable who never gainsay his advantages or ever thinks to take “ no ” for an resolution , war Hero of Alexandria or not .
The movie also state that not only does Gaston want Belle because she ’s beautiful , but because she ’s not fall all over herself to make headway his favor . It ’s a surprising bit of depth for a character who is otherwise so shallow . It ’s not just require what he ca n’t have , but wanting something actual . A prequel could show us how he comes to that decision , how all the “ widows ” started to lose his interest . Of course , Gaston ’s motives still do n’t condone his actions .
A Gaston prequel also becomes a LeFou movie . In the unrecorded - action Beauty and the Beast , it ’s LeFou who arguably has the big emotional turn . He starts out as a consecrate sucker for Gaston , stake Gaston when he abnegate trying to kill Maurice ( which he wholly did do and which LeFou was there for ) , starts express question about Gaston ’s action mechanism , and finally changes sides in the final battle . A picture where LeFou idolizes Gaston during the war , where he palpate like Gaston kept him alive , explain LeFou ’s devotion . It also cuts out the nasty implication that LeFou , who is mirthful in the movie , just follows Gaston because he has a press on him . Ever since the whole “ gay present moment ” divine revelation , I have enounce that I wanted Beauty and the Beast to end with Gaston and LeFou realize that toxic maleness was the real villain the whole time . And since I did n’t get that , I would like a prequel exploring some of the same issues instead .
All of those would be great things to explore in a Gaston movie . Layering it all with how funny these two player are would only make it better ; it ’s prosperous to laugh at both of them , but there ’s a real peril in them , defying you to not take them severely . In Beauty and the Beast , Evans and Gad proved that they had enough chemical science , comic timing , and serious dramatic chops to pull their own film off .
Plus , we did n’t get nearly enough of either of them blab out . Give me this movie . Please .
