Over at the Guardian , author / comic Simon Dunnraises a compelling interrogative : when science fabrication writers or creators insert detritus science or “ technobabble ” into their story , are they doing the same thing as the people who promote pseudoscience with a straight face ? And is n’t technobabble basically the same sort of mumbo jumbo as people apply to extol the healing power of magnets ?
He add :
To be honorable , as a writer , I used to have no problem with this misuse of skill . If it serves the story , that ’s all that count . I do n’t even have a problem with it as a lector or a viewer . All I care about is being swept along by a great plot .
But it does beg the question ; do we have a obligation as artists to respect the scientific method ?
As a doubter , I objurgate the way alt.med at once function and blackguard skill . Should n’t I hold my writing up to the same criterion ?
He close with a charge call for skill fiction that respects the scientific method and realise science the hero , which I think we can all get behind . [ Guardian ]
