The idea for Eli Roth tomake a horror movie aboutThanksgivingwas in the beginning a joke . Several holidays are synonymous with Hollywood horror . Halloween , of course . Christmashas a few flick . Valentine ’s Day too . But Thanksgiving ? That ’s so airheaded . Or is it ?

While every frame of Thanksgiving , which is now in theaters , has the zest of self - awareness sprinkled on top , Roth ( who co - save and directs ) plays things passing seriously . It ’s like everyone involved was told , “ Yes , this idea is slow , but if we pretend it ’s not dim , everything will fall into place . ” And so , the film has the skilful of both worlds . We enjoy the absurdity of the assumption but are suck in in by everyone ’s commitment to it . There is plenty of witticism throughout , but it add up almost exclusively from Roth ’s penchant for jape - get repulsion . You express joy because you ’re churn up , not because you do n’t worry . All of which chip at Thanksgiving into a very sharp , very merriment slasher flick that feel more conversant than not , but still delivers on the sick , silly hope thatcame from that fake trailer almost 20 years ago .

All of this comes together decent at the get-go of the flick with its completely mental hatchway chronological succession . While the Thanksgiving holiday is take with recognizable iconography , most of which is well - map in the movie , Roth take a penetrative turn mightily at the start , kicking thing off in a whole other place entirely . Another huge facet of modernistic Thanksgivingis the idea of Black Friday , the day after Thanksgiving when holiday shopping start with scads of unmissable discount . It ’s an musical theme that ’s evolved over the long time and , in some unfortunate eccentric , get out of hand with ferocity and mayhem ..

grace lead off there , with a Black Friday shot taken out of your gloomy nightmares . Selfish , cartoonish Americans yelling , yell , and eventually rioting and bruise one another . It ’s a disturbing , hilarious , and also all too credible prospect that induce Thanksgiving off to a high - octane start . The event sends shockwaves through the townspeople ( Plymouth , Massachusets , of course of action ) and things pick up one year later when a killer who dresses like the former governor of Plymouth Colony , Mayflower rider John Carver ( great repulsion name by the way ) , decides to get back at the people who turn Black Friday into a cataclysm .

Most of that centers around Jessica ( Big Shot ’s Nell Verlaque ) and her friend group . Jessica is a high school elder whose father ( Rick Hoffman ) owns the WalMart - like stock where the Black Friday slaughter took place . After it becomes clear Carver is place people who were part of the Black Friday event , Jessica and her friend team up with the local sheriff ( Patrick Dempsey ) to attempt to find and stop the Orcinus orca .

As entertaining as Thanksgiving is throughout , it never gets better than that first conniption . Roth captures the Black Friday carnage with an energy and absurdity the rest of the moving-picture show never quite match . And yet , as Carver makes his way of life across Plymouth , Roth does bend his considerable horror muscles . Each killing is sillier and unadulterated than the next . Some are slow and methodical . Others plug you in the face by chance . Plus , many of them expend classic Thanksgiving item , including things found in and around the kitchen .

A Black Friday to never forget.

With the mostly unsung cast getting pick off one by one , Roth does his best Scream impression too , volunteer up several red herrings about who may be behind the masquerade . And while the enigma is n’t instantly obvious , once it ’s finally reveal at the end , it ’s more obvious than one may have hoped . That lack of imagery slice Thanksgiving back a bit but , overall , it still provides more than enough gratification when all is said and done .

It ’s plainly a blast to watch these mostly disposable characters run around panic-stricken and discover how the killer is going to get each and every one of them . knock a person in the oven ? Sure . thrust someone with elaborate kitchen utensils ? Fine . Freeze a face to the rampart ? Of naturally ! It ’s all handled like it ’s just another daytime in the slasher horror musical style — which , at last , is what earn it work .

With its unequaled beginning , Thanksgiving could ’ve very easily been one of those wink - wink repugnance movie . Something that ’s too cool or impudent for the room . It ’s not that at all . There ’s no super meta level to it ; this is just the guy who made Hostel stress to forge a new slasher horror ikon with gory kills and dense mythology to kick . That they happen to be centered around a familiar yet unconventional holiday is just a bonus because it means every twelvemonth , citizenry can see what John Carver is up to , and have a great prison term . Thanksgiving does n’t reinvent the slasher genre , but it adds some nice new fixings to the table .
