Every time of year of Doctor Who ’s formerly - sexy spinoff Torchwood seems to need one episode by P.J. Hammond , best sleep together for creating 1970s furore show Sapphire and Steel . Both of the yearly Hammond episodes have feature unearthly supernatural melodic theme ( sprite , ghosts ) and gonzo hokey plot line . And they both feel as though Hammond wrote them for something else and then slapped the figure of the Torchwood fictional character onto them .
Sapphire & Steel is one of the many TV show I was obsessed with as a baby and watched religiously . I remember score a blurry tenth - generation VHS dub of a PAL transfer of the creepy-crawly concluding history and watching it with awe . Now , I own the videodisc and have n’t been able to work myself to learn most of them .
Sapphire & Steel was about a brace of detective ( David McCallum , Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Joanna Lumley , Absolutely mythical ) who go around poke into rupture in time . The turn was that time itself was evil and covetous , and McCallum and Lumley had to keep time from running rampant and destroying everything . regrettably , the median S&S fib had enough suspense and twists for an time of day , somehow padded out to two or three hr .

But somehow , Hammond seems to have settle Torchwood is a phantasy show . And not just any fantasy show , but an extremely camp one .
I ’ll adjudicate to resume Wednesday night ’s storyline , which was pretty inexplicable . There ’s a grouping of ghosty traveling carnival performing artist , who used to do late at nighttime 100 year ago . They would visit a township and steal people ’s breaths , leaving the victims in a kind of dyspnoeic comatoseness . Then with the advent of cinema , the ghosty circus family line could n’t draw in audiences . Plus they somehow got catch inside a movie , because they ’re made out of photons . And camphor . ( ? ? ) But now that someone is point an entirely unrelated piece of old motion picture , the carnival freaks are able to escape and set out slip people ’s breaths again . But they also want revenge on movie theaters , for gain move around freak shows obsolete .
The best part is the goal , where Jack manages to trap the circus performers back inside an old film camera . But the last one , the ringmaster , opens his flaskful and lets out the stored “ breaths ” of all his victims , which are purr around like trivial see - thru strain - Pisces the Fishes . And misfortunate Ianto has to make a big show of dashing around assay to catch the breath back in the bottle .
Actually , something just occur to me . As Torchwood continually remind us , Cardiff is a urban center covered with shut electric circuit goggle box photographic camera , all over the post . If anything that captures photon traps these circus wraith , then how can they even walk around Cardiff without getting sucked into one of the millions of spy cameras ? Or does it really only work with old - timey film cameras ?
I do n’t really have anything more to say about this sequence , except that I experience really bad for the regulars , especially John Barrowman and Gareth David - Lloyd , who have to return some really ludicrous dialog . The only other thing I ’d say is that , for once , an especially fearsome instalment is n’t a reason to hate Torchwood in universal . It ’s such an untypical episode , it ’s best just push aside . Or mocked at three A.M. after a lot of whiskey .
