Supernatural used to be a show with a pretty unclouded air between humans and monsters . The Winchesters and other Hunters protected man and killed monster . But now , not only are the Winchesters expert buds with the one - clip King of Hell , they ’re also bonding with him over an addiction to murdering their own kind .
Spoilers ahead …
On the surface , last night ’s Supernatural was all about dependency . The first half of the episode deals with Crowley going cold - dud on the injections of human blood that he ’s gotten strung-out on , which have made him vulnerable to the machinations of Hell ’s new ruling power , Abaddon . The second one-half deals with Dean finding the First Blade and fall afoul of Magnus , the Blade ’s current possessor who ’s addicted to collecting rarified aim and animal and want to turn Dean into part of his collection ( and part of his armory , too . )
But really , the thread run through all of this is that it ’s fun to pop humans . That ’s what Crowley is reveling in , at the start of the installment — paradoxically , the Winchesters ’ attack to “ heal ” Crowley of being a daemon only leave him with a weakness for kill humans and shooting up with their rake . It seems to make Crowley more excited and sensible , but at the same time he ’s killing rafts of them without any remorse .
And then in the end , Dean kill his 2nd human in as many episodes , without even batting an eye — and it ’s obvious the First Blade is oppose with the Mark of Cain on Dean ’s branch to do something weird to him . Dean is becoming a “ killing machine ” as Crowley cast it , and he ’s not going todistinguish between monsters and people when he get his murder spree on .
Really , at this point , only certain human life are worthful — like Sam , for whose spirit Dean was willing to trade thousands ( or maybe millions ) of others , who will expire at the hands of demons because Dean stop Sam closing the gates of Hell . Other citizenry who seem to be innocent dupe still deserve saving — but Dean is no longer going to be yield a free pass to steady man who turn evil . If they ’re evil enough .
The best persona of the installment , natch , involve Crowley ’s blood binge at the beginning and his confrontation of his traitorous personal assistant Lola , who snitched on him to Abaddon . And his taunting of Sam while they attempt to find a mode to rescue Dean from Magnus . As always , Mark Sheppard effortlessly steal the show , while managing to show a few raw sides of one of his longest - run characters .
But meanwhile , the installment left me enquire what Abaddon ’s big game plan is . At one item , Sam mentions that Abaddon want to turn the world into “ Hell on Earth ” — and I recognize that it ’s been about a 12 episodes since we ’ve take heed what Abaddon has in mind . If that ’s supposed to be the hover wager for this time of year — Abaddon choose over Hell and then turning the Earth into another Hell — it might be a good theme if we find out some hints of how on the button she ’s doing that .
In retrospect , Supernatural has n’t had a full coherent season - foresightful arc since its original storyline concluded at the ending of season five — but the matching arcs of the Fallen Angels and the Civil War in Hell have feel even more staccato and wayfaring than the Purgatory and Tablets storylines did in previous seasons . By this point in the season , it would be proficient if we actually had a common sense of the over - arch storyline edifice towards a climax .
