Looking like something directly off ofDavy Jones ’ shipin the Pirates of the Caribbean , five cannons take care air for the very first time in almost 300 years yesterday as they were lifted from what ’s believe to be fabled pirate Blackbeard ’s deep-set ship .
The capsize watercraft in interrogative sentence , Queen Anne ’s Revenge , is recorded to have gone down as early as July 12 , 1718 , but it was n’t until 1996 that archaeologists were really able to settle it along the ocean storey . And though we’vebeen bring up tens of thousands of rotten , moldy , and totally amazing sea rover artifactsfrom the wreck for age , today ’s catch is the largest cannon memory cache yet .

Prior to yesterday ’s haul , project director Billy Ray Morris released the follow statement about the coming expedition :
We think the largest of the four cannons may be of Swedish origin since the only other recovered gun for hire this size of it was made in Sweden . We also hope to recover two orotund concretions each the size of a twin bed . They may contain bbl basketball hoop , cannon balls and other treasures .
And just how big might that individual Swedish one be ? No less than a thumping 3,000 pound of casting - iron capable of sending 6 - lb cannonballs zoom around two mile . The remaining four cannon weighed in at a ( comparatively ) measly 2,000 pounds each . And this is only a stern of the total haul , which now sum up up to 20 recovered cannons in all .
AsPopSci notes , this impressive mess of firepower is what allowed Blackbeard to blockade the port at Charleston , SC for well-nigh a week before his sister sank for near in 1718 . Just six months later , now without his treasured Queen Anne ’s Revenge , a tatter - squad attack by the colonies of North Carolina and Virginia was finally able to do Blackbeard in for serious . Three - hundred year later , though , his legacy still lives on , and you could even check outthis awesome interactive mapping of the shipwreckcreated by a North Carolina museum dedicated to the caption itself .
