The surprising discovery of a sherd inscribed with an old German verse form , in which a female virgin argues with her genitals about who is more worthy to piece , push the origin of the poem back 200 years , changing our conceptions of sex in the Middle Ages .

The saucy old poem is called Der Rosendorn , or The Rose Thorn , and only two copy of the text were known to subsist prior to this discovery . Christine Glassner from the Institute for Medieval Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences ( OeAW ) made the breakthrough while thumb through manuscripts at the library in Austria ’s Melk Abbey , accordingto a press vent .

Glassner did n’t cerebrate much of the tattered old sherd at first , and for unspoiled grounds . Asnotedin the Guardian , the thin small-arm of parchment mensurate 22 centimeter long and just 1.5 centimeter wide ( 8.7 in by 0.6 inches ) , and its 60 lines were grossly uncompleted , having only a few letters per billet after being cut from a larger , presumably stark text file . On its own , the shard was deem unremarkable , as long strips of parchment were often used during the Medieval Era to bind texts .

Upon closer examination of the sherd , however , it soon became obvious to Glassner and her fellow that they were dealing with a verse form of historical import . With the assist of Nathanael Busch of Germany ’s Siegen University and other collaborator , Glassner was able to distinguish the textbook as belong to Der Rosendorn , making it only the third make out copy of the verse form , the others being the Dresden Codex and the Karlsruhe Codex .

Perhaps more significantly , the newly discovered poem was date to around 1300 CE , which is 200 days older than the previous versions . This means the titillating poem was save earlier during the Medieval Era than previously thought , offering newfangled insight into the social and cultural norms require sex activity during this time menses in Europe .

The poem itself need a virgin female person ( “ junkfrouwe ” ) who is having a debate with her apparently opinionated vulva ( “ fud ” ) about which of the two is more attractive to men . In the mechanical press release , Glassner said the verse form was “ incredibly clever , ” showing that “ a person can not be secernate from their sexuality . ” A Wiley Post from the History Blog describes Der Rosendorn indetail :

It severalize the saucy fib of a Virgo and her vulva arguing over which of them is most sympathetic to men . The virgin argues her beauty is the lot . Her vulva fence that ravisher does n’t weigh because she ’s the one who provide all the pleasure . They settle to infract up and prove once and for all which one of them is proper . The vulva break off by ingesting a “ manic solution ” ( symbolizing penetrative onanism ) and goes on her way . The separation is a disaster . The vulva is uncaringly used by every man she encounters ; the Virgo offers herself to a mob of men who tread her in their rushing . In the end , they determine to become one once more . The narrator , a man who spied upon them from the beginning , is the one who reattaches them and he does so in the most obvious means you may opine : he , uh , fornicate the vulva back into the charwoman .

The poem usher a surprising level of sexual openness . Scholars of the Medieval Era project this sort of erotic cognitive content did n’t appear in German language school text or in the oral tradition until the end of the Middle Ages , typically in city around the 15th century , according to The History Blog .

The author of this German speech poem is unnamed , as is their gender . No grounds exist to intimate the document was deliberately destroyed on report of the poem ’s lurid content , according to the printing press release .
