There was a lot to like about last night ’s new Fringe . There was a tight raw mystery , a creepy-crawly townsfolk , a Crazies - fashion madness epidemic that turned out to have a ice chest account , a real mother wit of endangerment until the end , and some major hints as to where all this is live on .
But the heavy cause to like last dark ’s episode ? The fact that the gang is back together again , and they ’re starting to play like themselves . mollycoddler onward …
“ Welcome to Westfield ” was co - written by J.R. Orci , who was a regular scriptwriter on Fringe back in the first time of year but left the show ’s staff during the 2nd and third seasons , and only recently returned . So maybe that ’s one cause why this episode had such a “ time of year one ” feel to it . ( Although actually , I like it more than I liked a lot of episodes in the show ’s first time of year . ) The characters felt like they were discover each other all over again , but also like they were working together as a team , to solve this whodunit . And there was more of that family feel that the show used to have .

The “ alternate universe where Peter kick the bucket as a tike ” thing is a cool notion — but it ’s just more fun to see this show when Walter and Peter are playing off each other . And like I name yesterday , Walter ’s more fun when he gets out of the lab and interacts with the outside world . Just the business enterprise of Walter in a diner , try on to get the out-and-out good pieplant pie in Westfield , is virgin amber somehow .
So it ’s arduous to unpick on the nose what ’s going on with Walter and Olivia in this sequence , actually . Last workweek , much was made of the fact that Walter was being a saccade to Peter , and in particular Walter seemed threatened by the fact that Peter was too competent and hence threatening to put Walter out of business . ( That contention between the Bishops came out of nowhere , and now it ’s gone back to nowhere . ) Now , it turn out that Walter is find especially close to Peter , and is happier and more willing to venture out of his lab because Peter is around . ( perhaps Walter is following alt - Astrid ’s advice to treat Peter like his literal son ? ) In any cause , it ’s noticeable enough that Olivia tell Peter , “ I ’ve get wind how you two are together , and he seems to respond to you , ” encouraging Peter to talk to Walter after Walter ’s given up — and Olivia ’s rightfield : Walter and Peter find a solution together .

Meanwhile , Olivia is observably buffer towards Peter , and curious about his kinship with the “ other ” Olivia . But at least in Olivia ’s lawsuit , it ’s also made obvious that there ’s some bleedthrough of the “ original ” Olivia into this version — Olivia is think back cases that fall out in Peter ’s timeline , but which somehow did not happen in this version of events . And then there ’s Olivia ’s aphrodisiacal - time dream at the start of the installment , seen at remaining . Olivia is starting to have the “ other ” Olivia ’s memories , and at the closing of the episode , she on the spur of the moment starts smooching with Peter and bringing him Italian nutrient , like the “ other ” Olivia did . Is this being because of Peter ’s experiments with the Machine , or the universe - warp effects of being in Westfield , or just the long - term effect of having Peter around ? I think we ’ll find out at some point — but Walter does advert that Olivia ’s blood present no signal of the cosmos - falsify effects , in a screaming scene .
Meanwhile , the case of the week also has to do with universe of discourse phlebotomize - through , which is why the two events appear ( at least at first ) to be connected . This sequence does a nice bait - and - switch , with the resident of Westfield originally appearing to be turning into Reavers or snake god or whatever . But in fact , it ’s more that the two cosmos are being combined within the township limits , create a reality bubble that it ’s unimaginable to leave . All of the Ithiel Town ’s residents are starting to remember two freestanding versions of their lives , and it ’s driving them nuts . And the end event of the two universes take the same blank space will be a huge wave of destruction that will obliterate everyone and everything in its way of life . ( as luck would have it , our heroes find the one spot in the townspeople that will be spar , and get there in spite of a scary two - cheek guy in and various other risk . ) Also , I like the amount of job - resolution in this instalment , including figuring out the job , but also how to discover a dependable spot and how to get there when all electronics are out of action mechanism due to the wacky phenomenon .
Oh , and Walter asks for a gun , which is so clearly a terrible idea that Peter kick in him pepper spray alternatively — and then Walter ’s pepper spray ends up saving Peter ’s sprightliness .
It ’s a neat new twist on the show ’s long - time obsession with alternating universe and realness colliding . Just as last year , Olivia was injected with a blood serum that somehow gave her Fauxlivia ’s memory , this time around the whole town is being drive crazy by a dual circle of memory . In a lot of ways , Fringe has explored the belief that our memories make us who we are , and now we get to see what encounter to people whose identities are actually bifurcate — and it ’s not pretty .
So why did David Robert Jones want to make the two versions of that town merge ? It appear to have been some kind of test — but is he aiming to do the same thing on a larger scale , or is he hoping to do something dissimilar involving a unchanging connectedness between the universes ? Was the undulation of death part of what Jones was hoping for , or an unwanted side event ?
In any case , it was overnice to see the Bishops and Olivia acting like booster again — even if now we have to wonder just how much of that is because of another variety of cosmopolitan bleedthrough .
