Strange New World , a 1975 TV pilot light that just hit DVD , is base on conception from Gene Roddenberry . And this post - apocalyptic saga is full of amazing Seventies cheese , plus some fun nods to Star Trek . Check out our favorite moments .
In Strange New World , three spaceman are sent up to a space station for an experimentation into suspend liveliness . Why do they have to be in place to be put into suspended animation ? It ’s never entirely clear . But while they ’re asleep , meteors menace to make the planet all but uninabitable . So NASA settle to extend their sleep remotely , to 180 years . ( There ’s nobody on their blank space post who ’s not in freeze animation , because why would you do that ? )
So our poor boy waken up 180 eld later to find an Earth that ’s been trim down to dilapidation . We find all this out in a three - bit prologue that feels like an extended possible action credits . And then our hero ride their shuttlecrafts down to Earth , where they have two adventures . We ’ll call them “ Plato ’s Stepchildren with ringer , ” and “ The Omega Glory with Tigers . ” In the first one , our heroes are primp up in toga for no special reason , and trapped in a perfect companionship , which has one evil secret — involving clone ! ! In the second one , two tribes are fighting a centuries - old conflict as they descend into savagery — and one kinship group has LTTE !
Oh , and Roddenberry did n’t really write or produce this show , but it was based on his concepts and seems to do a pretty upright job of copy his usual style .
Anyway , it ’s play for anyone who lie with mid-1970s SF , and especially deserving see to it out for anyone who have sex Star Trek . We pick up some of our best-loved moment above , including a couple snippets of the prologue , Captain Tony freaking out over his toga , a campy weird funeral , and the revealing … of CLONES ! Also , a fight scene and one of the tyke harbinger that HE ’S bring forth THE SHOOTER .
you could buy it on DVD only from the Warner Archive , here .
