Gail Carriger grind up urban fantasy , steampunk , and Victorian gothics in her Parasol Protectorate serial . She explains what inspired the series , how she arrived at her soulless protagonist , and what ’s next for her heroine .

I say on your site that you started out working on a YA book , right ?
I started out writing an epic - fantasy - expressive style YA serial , back 10 or 12 years ago . I worked on that serial for ages and historic period , and I place it out and start out a slew of incontrovertible feedback . But I did n’t get any traction selling it , and bet back on it now , I realise it did n’t have that indefinable commercial-grade thing that publishers are look for . But for years I considered myself a YA author , and I think I use a lot of technique out of new grownup , for tempo and duologue and other tricks . But yeah , I came out of YA , I suppose you could say .
I see . And how did you get started with this finicky series ? What made you shift gearing ?
I take a whole step back and looked at what editor had grease one’s palms from me in the yesteryear . I ’d sold a span of unretentive stories , and those were all grownup ’ and they were all comedic . So I cerebrate to myself , well , if I require to sell something , I probably have to shift markets . So gave myself a test . I wish certain subgenres within science fiction and fantasy , and one of those is urban fantasy and another is steampunk . But I was noticing there was n’t a lot of lightheaded - hearted transportation , and I wanted some ridiculous , P.G. Wodehouse steampunk in my life . There also were n’t a lot of urban fantasy set in diachronic periods , which I really love . So what I really wanted to read was a comedic steampunk urban fantasy — but it was n’t there . So I twiddle my thumbs for a little while and wait for someone to compose it , and then thought that maybe the world was telling me what to write next .
So you literally started with what you wanted to read .
Basically , yeah . I view scientific discipline fiction and fantasy my genre . And I ’ve notice over the years that there does n’t tend to be a mountain of lighthearted , comedic hooey . Of course , there are Christopher Moore and Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams . But there are n’t a lot of women writers writing fun , fishy science fable and fantasy with strong , central female heroines , which is what I really enjoy . I wanted my kind of heroine and with some of the fresh tropes that have been embark the genre more recently , like steampunk and urban fancy .
Did you incur it unmanageable to balance the folkloric , urban fancy elements with the steampunk factor ?
Not at all . To me , steampunk and urban phantasy are of course hinge together . And I reckon that ’s because I love the early gothic Victorian literature , and both things resile from that movement . Gothic literature gave birth to a lot of the archetypes that we apply . Vampires and werewolf come out of the time period , but so do H.G. Wells and Jules Verne . So to me , because they ’re all utilise the same initial literary tropes and archetypes , they mesh really well .
I also imposed sure restrictions on myself when I was populace - building this alternating history , and one of them was I was n’t allowed to use magic or the occult arts . I want to have the scientific constituent . So if I was go to have a straightlaced world where vampire , lycanthrope , and shade did in reality exist , the Victorian mind would seek to understand them , using the aesculapian science and chemistry and biology and whatever pseudoscience they had . And I think that simple rule kept that balance between the steampunk , which is very scientifically based , and the urban fancy , which , by and large speak , is not very scientifically based .
And the funny affair is , the more I did research on different aspects of Victorian lodge , the more it made sense . I ’d search something like the British regimental scheme , and it would reckon , if you take a step back , exactly like the way wildcat packs are arrange up . The obvious explanation to me is they were using werewolves in their army . Or you look at all these bizarre fashions from the Victorian era , with the cravats and the incredibly pale face and the compulsion with parasols and self-aggrandising hat . And if lamia were setting the style course , then evidently all these things would be there . abruptly what ’s ridiculous seems perfectly logical .
There all these steampunk and fantastical element that are just fun to understand about . I ’m rum — which come first when you were write , the fun steampunk elements or the plot ?
Well , it depends on the book and it depends on which particular incident we ’re mouth about . The first al-Qur’an was pretty Christ Within on steampunk , because I thought a romance publisher might clean it up . After I knew they wanted a series from me and that I was run low to a scientific discipline fiction house , I could play with the password - building more . Then the steampunk became more and more a natural part of the world . Sometimes I demand to get my fibre moving , and I ’ll have to come up with a steampunk thing for her to travel on . Sometimes , I ’m researching the prison term period and some Victorian appliance fall up that could become an element if I just twist it or get on a steam locomotive .
It sounds like you do a mess of research . How do you go about it ?
At least half my writing fourth dimension is pass researching . So for every hour I ’m really get through on the keyboard , I ’m spending another hour seek to visualize out some tiny detail I need answered .
But I come to it from a complete love of the Victorian geological era . It ’s one of my favorite time menstruum . But most of my noesis is in specific areas that interest me , like the fashion or the manner . So I have to do a wad of research on those parts of the time I ’m not intimate with . The fact that the main character is in reality soulless — how did you arrive to that ? What inhale that conception ?
This had two hook . First , once I restricted so everything had to be scientifically explained , I really started looking into the mindset of a scientist from the time period . A lot of Victorian medical doctors used to think was there would be this balance in the natural macrocosm . Next to a poisonous plant will be the cure . So if scientists are studying vampires and werewolves , they ’re going to think there ’s something that ’s not necessarily a killer , but is kind of a ground . So then I start to think , what if lamia are n’t soulless ? What if , in fact , they have something that ’s extra , that allows them to survive better than everyone else ? What if you have an surplus of something and that ’s what permit you to survive that bite ? And what if that excess is impossible to foretell and very rare ?
So that ’s the first concept . Then , I started to research the prim estimate of the soul . And they really did believe it was concrete . scientist of the meter were religious men , and they thought their beliefs could be scientifically explained . Then I run across this one man who was actually trying to count the soul , who would take people near the ending of their life and put them on scale leaf and weigh them before and after death . So I think the Victorians would probably call this spare soul , and that ’s where I came up with the approximation that vampires and lycanthrope would have redundant person . Then , with the counterbalance hypothesis , the person who would poise them would have no soul at all .
I did n’t desire to go with the standard melodic theme of a prognostication or a very special person . I wanted my main character to be unique , but I want her power to be more tight-laced . It ’s more that she cancels the great unwashed out or grounds them . I also bed the idea of a heroine whose main acquisition is that she ’s just very , very practical and very logical , and her perspective on the human beings is really what gives her an upper hand . She does have this one strange power , but really her reward is its effect on her personality , which get her very prosaic .
What ’s next after Changeless ? You ’ve sold two more novel set up in the same world , ripe ?
Right , I ’ve got 5 total .
Are the main characters coming back ? Will we see some convergence ?
All 5 of the book are Alexia as the chief reference . I am 99.9 pct sure I ’m go to be stopping this series then . I would love to keep writing in the world , and I do hope and mean to do so . That might be writing about the genesis that come before or those that will come after , or it might be an geographic expedition of some of the more democratic side characters . I think the world is full-bodied enough for me to keep dabbling in it , but I do want to have a nice , clean arc for these characters .
