Zombiemovie kingGeorge A. Romeropassed out in 2017 , but his legacy will experience on constantly in his work — admit , now , an early 1970s “ drop off ” filmthat ’s soon debuting on Shudder . To learn more about The Amusement Park , io9 hopped on a TV call withSuzanne Desrocher - Romero , the tardy filmmaker ’s wife .
The Amusement Park was in reality a commissioned pic on the subject area of aging — and Desrocher - Romero spearheaded the motion picture ’s recuperation — but it ’s not without itsRomero - style horrors . It may also come as no surprise that she ’s the founder and president of the George A. Romero Foundation . Desrocher - Romero utter with us about her work and why she was concerned about how fan might respond to The Amusement Park . She also gave us an update of sorts on her late husband ’s mean terminal living dead picture show , Twilight of the Dead ; and her surprising pickaxe for least favorite among his films : “ He said to me , ‘ Oh my god , Suze , you are the only mortal , I ’ll have you know , that say this . ’ And I go , ‘ I ’m sorry George , but I just do n’t love it . ’ ”
Cheryl Eddy , io9 : The Amusement Park is not a typical George Romero movie , starting with the fact that it was commission by the Lutheran Society . What was its original intention ?
Lincoln Maazel, who also starred in Romero’s Martin, plays the tormented main character in The Amusement Park.
Suzanne Desrocher - Romero : It was commission by the Lutheran SeniorLife , a precursor to program like Meals on Wheels , and they want to charter a director to shoot something for their community centers to get the Holy Writ out , to help get support , and all of that . It was his only work - for - hire ever in his whole career , so it really was n’t meant to be expel as a film , per se . It was only in 2017 , when a very good friend of ours who was a programmer at the Turin Film Festival give me this 60 millimetre mark and a DVD . I was like “ Whoa , what ’s this ? ” And [ George ] said , “ Well , you know , it was a footling something I did in ‘ 73 . ” So three , four weeks before he pass , we slapped it in the videodisk instrumentalist and we follow it . I ’m tell apart you , it was incredible that a ) he never mention it , and b ) it was just so uptight , and so different , and so rough , and relevant , and all of those emotions that I was feeling . I say , “ Why is it that you never mentioned it ? ” and he was like , “ Suze , it was three day . It was bing , bang , gravy . We shot it , it was nothing , it was a commission . ”
After he eliminate … I ’m in mourning , I ’m wandering the halls , [ enquire ] what am I gon na do — and slow by dense , column inch by in , forward-moving impulse , we get a 501(c)(3 ) [ non-profit-making designation ] , which is our foundation , and then we decide that this is going to be our first task . We ’re travel to get this restored , we ’re going to get it out there , and we ’re last to see if people , Romero completists want to see this motion picture — because I understood that it was very much not like his normal films . It ’s quite different . And I was concerned that the zombi lover would not like it . So I did show that concern . But I think that citizenry are understanding that he ’s a filmmaker , and that this was an early work , and it ’s important that work come out , and that the message that he has for this film is relevant today — like a mickle of his flick , it ’s still relevant today . The more I see it , the more I realize how significant this film is . The message that it educe — that we can our aged , especially the ones who have no money , it ’s a scary thing , particularly with the pandemic when so many of them got wiped out . And the fact that we ’re all gon na age , it ’s all come towards us , we need to snap out of it because we ’re no elision … It was a powerful moment when I saw it , and I ’m beaming that it ’s out there and I ’m beaming citizenry are seeing it .
io9 : What did the Lutheran Society think of it ?
Image: Shudder
Desrocher - Romero : They [ did ] employ it ab initio , but I mistrust that they think it was a little edgier than they would have like . When I come on them in 2018 to see if they had a print — because the print I had was a hole ; it was heave , it was scratch , it was magenta , it was all of it — they had no record of it . They did n’t get laid they commissioned it , they did n’t have the film , they were like , “ distressing , but we have no idea . ” So IndieCollect restored it — for me , that was the easy part , for them it was the grueling part because it was just so hard . But once they reconstruct it , my job was just to get all my ducks in a quarrel and see if people were interested in see it . As it turns out , they are !
io9 : What ’s the fan reply been like ?
Desrocher - Romero : It ’s been very , I would say in reality excellent . It ’s been really , really awesome . It surprises me because like I say , I know the cinephiles would care it . I knew that the real Romero fans would care it . I just was n’t indisputable how disappointed , and I do n’t mean to be dismissive , but just sort of [ how disappointed ] the zombie sports fan [ would be ] . I was n’t trusted if they were pass to like it . But I recollect they do ! I think they esteem him as a film maker .

io9 : As you cite , it has some themes and elements that echo Romero ’s other works — not just the appearance of a biker gang , though that was delightful to see . When you ascertain The Amusement Park , what are the Romero trademarks that stand out to you ?
Desrocher - Romero : I could see his other films , his future films , in this moving picture . I could see the way he cut the movie , the way he shot it . I could see him making sure that the theme was expressed in a storytelling way , and a different direction , too — you fuck , the serviceman in the white room going into the amusement park , where you ’re supposed to go for fun . It ’s opine to be a pleasant experience . It ’s think to be one where you forget your difficulty … but as it turns out , it ’s not so risible . It just captures George ’s sensibility in every path . I just see him in every inch of that moving picture . Every build , I see him , I see his oeuvre . You fuck , he did n’t even suppose he had a peculiar elan , which is crazy — because he whole did . But when you ’re the filmmaker , when you ’re the artist , you do n’t needfully see your style so much . But I certainly did , and I did n’t even know who he was when I met him . I saw his films three months after we were dating and [ had ] a Romero film fete in my apartment , sitting next to him catch all of his pic . I ca n’t tell you how many people are jealous of this position I was in . But I could just see this film being more Romero than a stack of his other films , to be honest . It was really Romero - like in almost every means .
io9 : I was going to require if you were a repugnance fan before you met him , but it sounds like … peradventure not .
Desrocher - Romero : Not so much , no . I ’m more Shakespeare and , you know , Louisa May Alcott . I ’m sort of girly - lady friend in that way of life . Actually , he remember I was quite deprived in terms of my cinema knowledge , so I went to schoolhouse [ laughs ] . For 12 years , he showed me every important film , and I ’ve seen them all . I would n’t say I ’m a cinephile but I have come a longsighted way , definitely .
io9 : Do you have a favorite among his films ?
Desrocher - Romero : I really love Survival of the Dead . My 2d favourite isDay of the Dead . Then I would go with Night [ of the Living Dead ] . And my least favorite is Dawn [ of the Dead ] .
io9 : Whoa ! Why is that ?
Desrocher - Romero : I do n’t know . I find out it cheesy ! He said to me , “ Oh my god , Suze , you are the only person , I ’ll have you know , that sound out this . ” And I go , “ I ’m sorry George , but I just do n’t love it . ” And he ’d go , “ Well , you ’re the only one . ” And I still , even to this 24-hour interval , my squad at the [ George A. Romero Foundation ] will say , “ Whoa , whoa , whoa . Dawn of the Dead is like , the iconic cinema , ” and I ’m care , “ OK , well , whatever . ” So it ’s my least favorite . I bump Creepshow fun . Really like Martin , it ’s intriguing . But Survival , I really think is underrated and undervalued . I just do n’t get why people do n’t have sex that movie . I think it ’s extraordinary . I love it .
io9 : Any update onTwilight of the Dead ?
Desrocher - Romero : Well , [ the script is ] in my drawer . It wo n’t leave my drawer until there ’s a solid team that I feel prosperous with . I ’m go for it very tight to my vest because I ’m refer it ’ll be exploited . I ’d like to keep my reign with this project — it ’s his last chapter and I want to verify it ’s done correctly . It ’s nothing until it ’s something , and I ’m just not prepared to sell my soul for it , so it ’ll stay tucked by until the right team comes along .
io9 : What qualities would an ideal team have that would make you say yes ?
Desrocher - Romero : I conceive we need a fairly strong executive producer , for sure . I think we probably need a conductor — maybe not a far-famed director , but someone who ’s coming [ up ] , who has the sensibility but yet who will respect Romero but obviously it ’s not Romero . manifestly , my dream would be to have it be directed by George , but that ca n’t materialize . So it ’s going to be interesting to see what bechance . I did want to let citizenry know that it existed , but as far as a plan , it ’s gon na be in my drawer until somebody say “ Trust me , I will do the right thing . ” I ’m very protective so I will ensure that it ’s done right .
