Therecently announcedGrid 10 Tablet aims to deliver Fusion Garage after their very much failedJooJootablet . The Grid 10 ( and its phone - buddy the Grid 4 ) make it with much ballyhoo and exaggeration .

Grid 10
The Grid 10 feature a 10.1 - column inch screen that throng in a result of 1366 by 768 picture element . On paper , that should make it the best pill display out there . But the display is dense and the glass is extremely ruminative . The viewing angle are n’t particularly great , either , so watching a movie with a couple of friends may not be the most gratifying of experiences . Like many of its Android cousins , it adopts the 16:9 widescreen ratio , which think of holding it in landscape painting is the only way it feels instinctive . The brushed Al body experience nice and inflexible , but it ’s 1.5 Pound , which is a tablet fatass at this point in the secret plan . The index button is the only strong-arm release on the Grid 10 . I ’m generally pro - button , but I did n’t mind it so much in this case , as the motion - sensitive bezels made up for it ( more on that later ) .
The demonstration had only half of the RAM that the last interpretation will have . This created mucho problem . Games would play well for a little while and then you would run out of memory and you would have to do a hard reset . A hard reset when you run out of retention ? The last social unit will have 512 MB of memory , which is n’t bad , but gamy - end Android tablets are mob 1 GB of RAM .
software package
The Grid 10 and the Grid 4 both run Fusion Garage ’s new operating scheme , Grid OS . You would n’t live it by take care at it , but Grid OS has Android in its genes . It is built on top of the Android kernel — from 2.3 , really — but it ’s about as unrecognizable as John Travolta / Nic Cage in the movie Face Off . Fusion Garage CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan order that they only used those kernel as a bound off point , and they ’ll cover to evolve the OS from there ( i.e. they wo n’t be waiting for future versions of Android in order of magnitude to move ahead ) .
The centerpiece of Grid OS is its desktop which is , not astonishingly , one big effing grid . It ’s big than big . really , it ’s infinitely expandible . It ’s unlike anything on any other tablet . All of your apps live on the grid , and you may add tiles for bookmarks and contact lens as well , and then set up them into ( nameable ) grouping as you see fit . No doojigger , though , which is a bummer . chemical group ( think : folders ) are collapsible and expansible , and can be moved around . The problem with this is that your grid ends up take care like a cock-a-hoop mussy screen background with dozens of stuff and nonsense on it . All of the token are the same size . In other words , the apps you use all the time are no more prominent than the apps you almost never use . Even Chandra got miss on his desktop a few sentence while he was showing it to me . There ’s a mapping in the upper right corner that give up you to jump around the grid very quickly , but while you could see the shape of the groups you made , you ca n’t see the public figure of the chemical group themselves .
Gestures are a bounteous part of the OS , which I care a lot ( adopt some from the PlayBook ’s playbook ) . Regardless of what app you ’re in , two - finger’s breadth swiping in from the left bezel brings up the Heartbeat app . This is where you see your notifications and upcoming calendar appointments , and also where you tack between open apps . The Heartbeat app also boasts some “ intelligent ” features , like if it ’s dejeuner clock time and you ’re in Midtown Manhattan , it will recommend some places to eat nearby ( though we had difficulty get this feature to exercise during my demo ) . Two - finger swiping in from the ripe bezel is the equivalent weight of the back push button , and in from the top bezel will take you back to the home grid .
Because Grid OS is build on top of Android , it will run Android applications , and it does n’t necessitate an emulator to do it . Testing it out with a few Android games , it seemed to puzzle out passably well , but it remains to be understand what ’ll work and what wo n’t . Grid OS drug user wo n’t have access to the Android Market — they’ll be fix to Amazon ’s appstore and other third party option . A problem , ’cause they ’re nowhere virtually as fleshed - out as the Android Market . APIs will soon be free to developers so they can set out building apps directly for Grid OS , but frankly , who ’s going to write apps that be given on a single tab ?
Other quick bank bill : the web browser app looked great , and when it was actually run smoothly , it was my favourite browsing experience on any mobile machine yet . Flash flirt with no problem — except when it did n’t . The telecasting applications programme is excellent . I could jump around the HD motion-picture show with no stuttering , and it would stay in sync with the Grid 4 telephone . Bing ( ! ) is deeply integrated into the group O and it has a bunch of live , contextual search office build - in throughout .
Grid 4
The ironware is far , far from last , but currently it ’s set to have a 4 inch , 480 x 800 screen ( the same tech as the Grid 10 , which was about mid - range , I ’d say ) ; a 1.2GHz Dual - Core Qualcomm Snapdragon ( though that may exchange ) ; 512 MB of RAM ; 16 GB onboard storage ; and dual - cameras .
Powered by the same Grid OS , you voyage the phone ’s background in the same way . Potentially a problem , as the smaller screen real estate of the realm makes find oneself the apps / contacts / groups you need even more unmanageable than it already was on the much orotund tablet . It syncs with your Grid 10 to keep your calendar , contacts , email , and other stuff from turning into a jumbled pickle . It will also keep your office in videos between the devices ( as long as you have the video put in on both ) . The software is by all odds bare aright now , as they have not even added the Heartbeat app in yet , which will toy an essential character in the earpiece ’s functionality .
It ’s too soon to make any kind of a call on either of these twist , but whether they turn out to be unspoilt or high-risk , at least they ’re not boring .
