Nintendo and Illumination announced in September 2021 that Pratt, 43, wascast in the animated movie to play Mario, the traditionally Italian plumber from the popular video-game franchise that originated in Japan.
Pratt previously voiced lead roles inThe LEGO Moviefranchise and Disney/Pixar’sOnward, and will also bebehind the orange cat Garfieldin an upcoming movie.
“We cover it in the movie, so you’ll see we definitely nod to that,” Meledandri explained of the accent, though he said, “That’s not the tenor of the performance throughout the film.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s voice cast also featuresSebastian Maniscalco,Kevin Michael RichardsonandFred Armisenas Cranky Kong. It will also include a cameo from Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario and others in the video game series since the 1990s.
The upcoming movie is set to premiere just under 30 years after a live-action film based on the popular Nintendo video-game franchise, which starredBob Hoskinsas Mario,John Leguizamoas Luigi,Samantha Mathisas Princess Daisy andDennis Hopperas King Koopa.
The Super Mario Bros. Movieis in theaters April 7.
