These look-alike of a car crash stake by the Oregon State Police have die viral , largely because of how freakish the incident was . They carry the images of the   accident on Twitter on Thursday .

The picture show a car with what seem   to be water and eels pullulate out of it   and spilling out onto the road .

The police department initially offer no account of the incident , just more intriguing range of a function of the creature lying there on the highway .

The fire department also posted television of the " eel " twist around on the trading floor .

The tweets go viral , with many masses asking what on Earth was going on .

So what encounter here ? Well , we at last have an explanation . After a lot of teasing , the Oregon State Police give an explanation on their website about the incident , in a post titled " Slime Eel Crash on Highway 101 " .

They explain that the Mitsubishi truck ( seen some distance from the ooze - covered cars in the photos ) was transferring 7,500 pounds of hagfish , hump as " goo eel " , despite not in reality being eels , up the main road . When the vehicle was flagged to kibosh by a traffic bull , the gadget driver , Salvatore Tragale , attempted to discontinue . unluckily , the transfer of weight caused one of the containers to get along on the loose , and slide onto the route and tip over . The other containers soon followed suit , and break from the bottom of the truck , spilling onto the main road .

When one of the loose containers struck the Nissan railroad car ( covered in hagfish in the picture above ) it get a pileup of cars behind it . The cars were hatch in eels , with the Nissan at the front , driven by Kim Randall , 64 , the unlucky recipient of the most fish .

alas for all involve , when hagfish become accentuate they secrete mucus , which is the goop that can be seen in the photos and this video , captured by a witness .

Hagfish gunk is created   when saltwater interact with two different ingredients secreted by the eels ' slime glands : mucin vesicles , which rapidly swell and burst in seawater , form a gloopy connection of mucous secretion strands , and threads that are rich in a type of fiber visit an intermediate filament .

The easy lay hasall sorts of interesting properties . The strand of slime threads are 100 times thinner than a human hairsbreadth but 10 times stronger than nylon , and they could be used in everything from protective wear to bungee cords in the future .

But that ’s probably of small comfort to the ardour department that had to clean house the mess up .
